okay, not the 70s, but my personal favorite version, the middle solo just flows and the ending is classic...

now, as far as best versions fo the 70s...an official Dead release of 10-21-1978 is the best version of this tune from this decade...06-18-1974 is the best pre-retirement, but this too is a Road Trips release...

so, I leave you with this one, 07-18-1976, the Orpheum

enjoy!

Yep, I know, it's not 70's http://www.archive.org/details/gd1989-08-18.sbd.walker-scotton.miller.83774.sbeok.flac16
but it is one of the best. I HIGHLY recommend this one to all.

July 31, 2004 The Dead in Mansfield ,Massachusetts has one of the finest Stella Blues I know of....i know you were looking for Jerry , but this tribute to Jerry by Warren Haynes is stellar and i feel worthy of mention...

Don't know 'bout ultimate but I do favor the early versions.
In comparison to later years when the tune came to occupy the 'featured ballad' position of the performance, these older versions are beautiful for their raw, stripped down presentation. Which for me is far more consistent with the mood and sentiment of the tune.

These two are a year apart and both come after Dark Stars.

I love the 12-6-73 stripped down is right, and beautiful. You kinda have to hear the whole second set to get the full picture. Check out Nugs.net for the 10-21-78. "Ideally there's a song in there that's so delicate that it's got a moment in it of pure silence". Jerry 88

I'm not sure why no one has mentioned this one yet:

Also can be found on the So Many Roads box set.
10/21/78 is a big thumbs up here as well. In addition, check out 7/22/72 (Download #10) for a great early version.

I keep coming back to Cotterell Gym 1977-11-04. Even with a couple of flubs - final solo is very heartfelt. The first set also has a wonderful Let it Grow.
